Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is at the of our values and is integral to our community. There are five fundamental values that are center to academic integrity: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility. Students who utilize the work of others without proper citation or reference are in violation of these values, and are committing academic dishonesty. Such dishonesty not only discredits the student who is plagiarizing the work of another, but also the school community as a whole. We encourage students to develop practices that support academic integrity, such as independent learning, developing study skills such as note taking and time management, and respecting the ideas of others by utilizing proper citations and references. It is the responsibility of all students to be familiar with the specific policies pertaining to student conduct and academic integrity.

The information below describes common violations of each of the policies outlined in the University Policy Handbook. It is important to note that this list is not inclusive of all violations to the policies

Academic Integrity Violations

Cheating, attempting to cheat, or assisting others to cheat, including dishonest activity or unauthorized use of any resource or materials in any academic exercise. An example of this policy violation is sharing an assignment. This policy applies to both the student who provides an assignment as well as the student who receives the assignment.  Fabricating, falsifying, forging, altering, or inventing information that applies, but is not limited to,academic coursework, any academic exercise or academic activity

An example of violating this policy is to overstate the number of observation hours you completed for your practicum.  Plagiarizing, intentionally or unintentionally, the words, works, or ideas of others without proper citation or acknowledgement and representing them as one's own in any academic exercise. Paraphrasing sources which do not represent the student's original words or ideas without proper citation or acknowledgementAn example of plagiarism is copying and pasting information retrieved from another source without proper citation and reference.  Presenting work that has been prepared by someone other than yourself, including the purchase or sharing of work

An example of this policy violation is submitting an assignment which was written by another student.  Submitting work that has been prepared and used for a different course, wholly or in part, and without appropriate citation of the original work and prior approval of facultyThis policy is also known as selfplagiarism. A form of selfplagiarism is reusing a portion or resubmitting the entire paper that you submitted in your COM 126 course for your ENG 105 class.  Using materials not authorized by the faculty member to complete an assignment, or completion of an assignment by someone other than the student, including, but not limited  to, providing/receiving exam answers, using faculty materials, answer keys, or solution manuals.
